Programme direction

The Cochlear Implant Programme

A cochlear implant does not amplify sound. It replaces the failed part of the inner ear, turning sound into electrical signals the hearing nerve can read.

The surgery is the short part. What decides the outcome is everything around it: finding the children early enough, testing them properly, selecting the ones an implant will actually help, switching the device on, and then months of mapping and speech therapy with the family. Running that chain at a public teaching hospital is the work Professor Osmany directs at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

She took on the role in 2025, by government appointment, a year after Bangladesh’s government medical colleges got their first female professor of the subject. Wednesdays now belong to the cochlear implant clinic at Dhaka Medical College, the other fixed point in a week built around her head and neck cancer practice.

Teaching

Training the next generation

Undergraduate

Head and neck lectures to fourth-year MBBS students, alongside ward teaching for fourth- and fifth-years at Dhaka Medical College.

Postgraduate

Thesis adviser to eight FCPS and MS trainees in otolaryngology.

Research

Interests

Her published work spans otology, head and neck oncology and infectious disease, but the throughline is hearing: noise-induced hearing loss, cochlear implantation, and the surgery of head and neck cancer, alongside sleep apnoea. That work on noise and hearing has fed directly into public policy. She has advised the government on the laws governing noise pollution in Dhaka.
